From January 22nd to 24th, the Culture United partners came together in Scotland, to experience Edinburgh taking on interdisciplinary teaching in primary education. Edinburgh links their 'Burns and Beyond', a multi-day event in honour of the most famous Scottish poet Robert Burns, to primary education according to the interdisciplinary learning principle.
For the Burns and Beyond primary school project, the Scottish partners of the project (creative learning from the city council of Edinburgh and UniqueEvents) joined forces to organise an extensive range of activities together with 4 local primary schools. They did this in a very short period of time (several weeks), as they wanted to crab the opportunity of the festival taking place in January 2020.
Their hard work resulted in a big performance by over 150 primary school children during the ‘Bairns Burns Supper’ (kids Burns dinner): a traditional (but not so traditional) celebration of poet Robert Burns, with Haggis, ceilidh dancing and amazing performances of the children in dance, spoken word, singing, drama and art. It was a creative production in which every child took part and had its own moment to shine, felt seen and learned about their cultural heritage (Robert Burns) in an engaging, fun way!
The three-year project 'Culture United', a collaboration between Leeuwarden (The Netherlands), Edinburgh (Scotland), Dundalk (Ireland) and Oulu (Finland), focuses on cultural and heritage events as a driver of interdisciplinary teaching in primary education. It’s all about using the natural enthusiasm of kids to teach in a fun and inspiring way. The strength of the international cooperation project lies in the fact that concrete results are achieved locally and that knowledge and experience is shared at a European level.
